The Basics of ID Lanyards

ID lanyards have become such a necessity nowadays that you can just find them anywhere: in department stores, school supplies shops or even in hardware stores. Made in different lengths and lanyard colors, lanyards are available for purchase for anyone who wishes to use them.

However, not all people would like to avail of ordinary lanyards found in stores. Sometimes, there are people who would like to have theirs customized for different reasons. If you are among these people who would like to have their ID lanyards customized, you should then know the three lanyard basics so that you can fully personalize your own.

1. Lanyard Material

First, you have to start with the material that you will be using for your lanyard. There are a lot of materials available for making ID lanyards and the most popular among these is the polyester.

Polyester lanyards are both durable and affordable, which is why most people choose to invest in them. However, if you would like some other materials, there are silk, satin and nylon.

When you choose which material to use for your personalized lanyard, you must take note of its purpose. If it is for temporary use only, you may want to consider such as polyester or tubular lanyards because they are cheaper compared to woven or nylon.

However, if you are taking into consideration the appearance of the lanyard because it will be used for a social event, it is best that you opt for nylon or woven lanyards because of their sophisticated looks.

Also, some lanyard cords are not compatible with certain printing methods. If you are planning to put a logo or a text, try to stay away from silk or tubular lanyards. Instead, go for polyester or woven lanyards as text and logo imprint better with these materials.

2. Lanyard Length and Width

ID LanyardsThe standard length for lanyards is 36”. Almost all lanyards, customized or not, are in the said length. However, if you need a shorter or a longer length, you can always have it customized by your supplier. The most common clients who have their ID lanyards customized are schools because they would want the length to fit accordingly with the younger students. In other circumstances such as in offices or parties, purchasers opt to stick with the 36” length.

As to the width, you should know that lanyards can be made as thin as 5/8” and as wide as 1”. The width would have to depend on the purpose for which the lanyard is to be used. Most schools or companies opt for lanyards which are 1” in width.

One of the most important things you have to consider when deciding on your lanyards’ width is the text or logo that you may want to have printed on it. If there is a slogan or a logo that you wish to add to your lanyard, it is only proper that you purchase something with a wider width.

3. Lanyard Attachments

Your ID lanyards will not be complete without their attachments. An attachment is the small clip or ring which connects your lanyard with your ID. There are various kinds of attachments that you can avail of when you purchase your lanyards. The key ring, J-hook, bulldog clip, and the thumb trigger are considered to be economical choices for attachments as they are inexpensive but are nonetheless sturdy.

However, if money is not an issue, you may choose the more expensive attachments available for your lanyards such as the oval hook, thumb hook or the carabiner hook. These attachments costs a bit more compared to the bulldog clip or the thumb trigger but they are as durable and efficient.

Since you’re now aware of the basics of choosing the right lanyard, you shouldn’t hesitate to get a few for your own use or for your company. After all, you’re capable of making the right decision.
